Abstract

The sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) serve as a cornerstone of Islamic teachings, elucidating the Quran and shaping the practical framework of the faith. To preserve these sacred traditions in their pristine form, the early scholars of Hadith (Muhaddithin) devoted immense effort and established a rigorous methodology. This methodology meticulously evaluated each narration based on its chain of transmission (sanad) and textual content (matn), ensuring that no spurious or fabricated narration infiltrated the corpus of Islamic knowledge. This process included scrutinizing the authenticity of the narrators, examining their reliability, and conducting a profound analysis of the text’s meanings—a testament to their unparalleled diligence and scholarship. In their classification of Hadith, the scholars delineated various categories, among which the Zaeef (un authentic) Hadith is identified by deficiencies such as a weak narrator, a broken chain of transmission, or other flaws compromising its reliability. Regarding such narrations, the Muhaddithin adopted a cautious stance, as the foundations of religious rulings cannot be built upon sources of uncertain authenticity. Imam Shafi’i (RA) articulated a nuanced perspective, asserting that while Zaeef Hadith holds no place in core tenets or obligations of faith, it may be employed under specific conditions in matters of virtuous deeds (fadail al-a‘mal). This judicious approach underscores the delicate balance required in the acceptance or rejection of weak narrations. The significance of this subject becomes even more pronounced in contemporary times, where differences among Islamic schools of thought often stem from the acceptance or rejection of Zaeef Hadith. This research endeavors to explore the concept of weak Hadith, its principles of application, and Imam Shafi’i’s viewpoint, aiming to provide a balanced and scholarly understanding of this pivotal issue.
