Abstract

Malek Bennabi is considered one of the great thinkers of Islamic civilization. He was born in Algeria in 1905. From his early education to higher education and then entering the practical field, his homeland was under colonial rule. During this time, he studied contemporary civilizations. In his study of contemporary civilizations, the effects of colonialism were evident. In light of this, Malek Bennabi viewed the cultural decline of Muslims. According to him, neither merely adhering to tradition nor imitating the West can solve the problem for Muslims. Malik Bennabi presented the theory of "colonizability," (القابلیۃ للاستعمار) according to which being "colonizable" is a condition found in a nation that foreign nations merely 'discovered' rather than 'created.' Similarly, being "non-colonizable" is also a condition that does not come into existence unless it is created. In other words, unless you invite colonialism, it does not come to you on its own. Therefore, considering the occupation by colonial powers as the cause of the Muslim Ummah's decline cannot absolve us of responsibility. The current study presents an analysis of "Resolving the Intellectual and Cultural Issues of Colonialism in the Context of Malek Bennabi's Thought."
